Week 6

Save the Children

I have always been very interested in Save the Children. Save the Children is a humanitarian organization that protects children. What stands out for me is that they declare, "We save children's lives". That is powerful! They provide programs in health, nutrition, education, child protection, and child rights. I would want to work for an organization whose mission is to ensure children around the world have access to food, education, and medical care.

One position that really interested me is Advocacy Advisor-Humanitarian and Education because of its role:

The Advocacy Adviser will lead our influencing work in the African Union (AU) on humanitarian issues, peace and security and education - engaging widely with the AU Commission and delegations, and civil society organisations active in this arena. He or she will make a key contribution to our global advocacy success in these thematic areas, especially our organisational breakthrough of ensuring that children in humanitarian crises have access to a quality education.

Required Qualifications:
  • Education to degree level - an academic background in a directly relevant field s desirable.
  • Proven record of advocacy success and ability to develop and implement strategy, preferably at the regional level in Africa.
  • A background in influencing African national governments and engaging civil society partners in the region
  • Experience of creating networks of influence, and an ability to manage diverse professional relationships, thereby securing significant new opportunities for the organisation
  • Proven ability to speak and communicate effectively, and to tailor messages to different audiences
  • Experience of successfully operating in an international environment with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Experience of solving complex issues through analysis, definition of a clear way forward and ensuring buy in.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the AU, and its role in development, human rights and humanitarian issues.
  • Commitment to Save the Children's values.
  • Experience of, and willingness to travel widely, often at short notice and in conflict- and crisis-affected settings
  • Ability to work in English and French essential. Other official AU languages would be an advantage.

  5. Mimi,
As I'm reading about different organizations and communities, I like how there's so many organizations out there to help children, families, and educators. Advocating for children is not an easy task; however, with organizations like Save the Children and the like, there is opportunity and hope that children will receive education, health, love, and care that they need. Children have so much to offer, when we put a leash on them, they can't begin to explore all they can do. As an continuing and upcoming educational professional, I am appreciative of these types of programs. Thank you for sharing.

The leadership skill sounds like something you will be ready for especially at the end of your course. I noticed that the desirable educational part is a PhD.D. level degree; I guess I don’t really need to ask but it sound like you are planning on pursing a doctoral degree if so you can do it and the best to you!!

  10. We all have the same "dream job" in common, to work with children and their families and to make an impact. Although there are agencies and organizations worldwide that are committed to protect and supporting children and their families how can we ensure that our work will continue to be reinforced after the fact? I hope that organizations such as UNICEF continue to grow in numbers so that our mission will never seem impossible to the children awaiting our support. Thank you and Good Luck!

  11. I also picked Save the Children and FHI 360. One thing I noticed about FHI 360 is the work they are doing to help spread the world about HVI. I think it is important to get the message out to everyone in their home language. Looking at these different positions makes me excited about the possibilities.
